The second year allows you to specialise in production (directing and cinematography), post-production (editing and sound design), or research and writing, refining your craft through industry-focused projects. Specialisation continues into the third year with Advanced Directing, Cinematography, Editing, and Sound modules, culminating in a 15-minute short film designed for international film festivals.
At Solent, you’ll learn from active industry professionals and gain insights from guest speakers, masterclasses, and mentorship opportunities with leading directors, editors, and cinematographers. Our strong industry connections ensure students graduate with real-world experience and industry-ready portfolios.
Film production graduates have gone on to work on major productions across the UK and internationally, including projects selected for Cannes and Venice film festivals. Many have secured places at prestigious postgraduate programmes such as Columbia University and the NFTS Directing MA, which admits only six students per year. Others have seen their films picked up by Netflix, MUBI, and other major streaming platforms or have launched their own successful production companies working on high-end commercials, documentaries, and feature films.
With a strong emphasis on practical filmmaking, industry mentorship, and career development, Southampton Solent University provides the perfect environment for aspiring filmmakers to launch successful careers in the film industry.

They've secured roles with industry giants like Warner Brothers and Endemol and contributed to big blockbusters. Some have had their films picked up by Netflix, MUBI, and other major streaming platforms, or launched successful production companies creating high-end commercials, documentaries, and feature films.
Many have been accepted into prestigious postgraduate programs such as Columbia University and the highly selective NFTS Directing MA. Others have leveraged their transferable skills to pursue careers in arts management, business, teaching, marketing, graphics, VFX, and music production.
