This top-up degree allows former maritime officer cadets with a suitable foundation degree (FdEng) or HND qualification to top up these qualifications to BEng (Hons) level and prepare for senior engineering management roles ashore.
Building on your existing qualifications and industry knowledge, the course will develop your critical thinking and analytical skills in parallel with wider knowledge of the maritime industry.

The course will allow former cadets who have previously achieved a foundation degree (FdEng) or HND with at least a 50% average grade, and who want to further their career opportunities, to earn a BEng (Hons) degree.
Such candidates will be people who want to learn skills and strategies that will allow them to become ideal candidates for roles as senior managers (technical superintendents, vessel managers, etc) in their chosen shipping companies.
This course would suit former cadets who want to prepare themselves for a time later in their marine engineering careers when they may wish to come ashore and work as technical superintendents, vessel managers or similar roles.Â
The University cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.

You will learn how to manage stakeholder expectations and identify key players within the lifecycle of a project, to define requirements and establish proposed system architecture and to design and manage key interfaces between organisations and system components. Success criteria will be investigated through verification, validation and commissioning processes. You will learn how the design process should provide a basis for the full life cycle management of your delivered project.
This module will enable you to understand how effective and efficient people management adds to a company’s success. The module analyses the integrative nature of people management and how this is achieved through a range of management tools and techniques. The module will identify current themes and issues that relate to managing people from the perspective of the line manager in an organisation.
This module will explain the conduct of marine survey, incident, and accident investigations. Through it, you will consider the role of investigators appointed by maritime certifying authorities, government maritime accident investigation agencies, shipping companies, and protection and indemnity (P&I) insurers.
During this module, you will develop the skills in leadership and management needed to sustainably manage business and projects. You will explore the complex challenges of ensuring a sustainable future and develop the understanding and skills needed to make informed decisions for sustainable outcomes.
This module will enable you to develop an in-depth understanding of your chosen dissertation topic(s) and develop the skills to critically analyse, synthesise and evaluate your chosen area(s) of research. You will learn how to work autonomously and take full control and management of your time.

Solent EU Welcome Scholarship (Fee Discount)
This scholarship is available to students from an EU country, with EU nationality, who are applying for an undergraduate course starting in September 2025. The scholarship will reduce your tuition fees to £10,500.

Cost of living support
At Solent, we understand that the cost of living crisis may be of some concern. To help, we've put together some detailed information to show what support is available and how to make your money go further.
There is no charge to attend graduation, but you may be required to pay for the rental of your ceremonial uniform. You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost. Extra guest tickets will go on sale after results publication and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost per ticket is currently £15. Please note, we do not guarantee there will be any extra tickets available to purchase.
