Studied:BSc (Hons) International Business Management

Simon graduated from BSc (Hons) International Business Management in 2024. He now runs two companies and is pursuing a master's degree in Paris, France. We caught up with Simon to discuss his inspiring business career and the role Solent played in his success.

Tell us a little about your career so far.

I am an entrepreneur with a vision to create a thriving group of businesses across various industries, all focused on making a positive impact in the world. I aim to collaborate with passionate individuals from around the globe, sharing ideas and learning from one another to drive meaningful change together. My journey has been shaped by a commitment to innovation and a desire to foster a collaborative environment that empowers everyone involved.

What's a typical working day?

Currently, I run two companies: The Business Hive, which connects business professionals through networking events in Toronto and London, and a street marketing company where I rent holographic backpacks to businesses to enhance their communications.

Academically, I am pursuing a master’s degree at ESCP and CentraleSupélec in Paris, specialising in industry transformation. This dual focus in engineering and business is fantastic, as it allows me to be effective in my professional life.

My days are packed, and there’s never a dull moment. I balance my entrepreneurial responsibilities with my studies, ensuring I stay engaged and productive in both areas.

What were the challenges, starting out?

Life is always a challenge, and that’s not likely to change anytime soon! I believe in aiming higher and further, continuously striving for progress. Expanding my knowledge and relationships has been essential in navigating these challenges. Each obstacle has provided an opportunity for growth, pushing me to learn and adapt as I move forward in my entrepreneurial journey.

Do you have any career highlights?

Before arriving at Solent, I wasn’t a strong student, and school was often a source of stress for me. However, being able to study at Solent, start two businesses, and now pursue my master’s at renowned schools has been incredibly satisfying. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience all of this.

What do you wish you’d known then that you know now?

I wish I had known the importance of being bold and curious. Speaking with as many people as possible and trying out different projects is crucial. As a student, you have very little to lose. Stepping out of your comfort zone, venturing far from home, and facing challenges head-on makes the journey even more rewarding. Embracing these experiences leads to greater success and personal growth.

Solent's support extended beyond the classroom, helping me establish my own company, The Business Hive, and navigate my entrepreneurial journey.

What was the best thing about your course lecturers?

The best thing about my course lecturers was their approachability and the strong communication we had. They were always there to ensure that I felt comfortable in the classroom. I have great memories of engaging discussions during lessons, which made me excited to attend class every day. It was much more than just a teacher-student relationship. It felt like a supportive community.

What about the facilities?

The facilities were incredible. The fully-equipped gym, spacious classrooms with advanced technology, and access to essential software like the Bloomberg terminal—usually costing £20,000 per year—were all fantastic. Overall, everything was outstanding!

Do you feel like your studies helped you prepare for a career in the industry?

Absolutely, my studies have significantly prepared me for a career in the industry. Through events at the career centre and opportunities to work directly with partner companies like Enterprise Rent-A-Car or The Wolf Rock Boat Company, I have gained valuable professional experience. My degree has helped me become more professional and build confidence in the workplace, while fostering my ambition to excel in my career. Additionally, it has also enabled me to pursue a specialised master's degree in the industry at some of the top business and engineering schools in France.

Solent gave me the opportunity to study and undertake a work placement in Canada. This practical experience has been invaluable in shaping my career.

What’s your favourite Solent memory?

My first week at Solent was amazing. I didn't speak English very well, but everyone I met made me feel comfortable despite the language barrier. Whether it was students from around the world, the staff in my student residence, or the lecturers, their support helped me adapt quickly. That first week remains one of my best memories, and I knew right away that the years to come would be fantastic. I am still very grateful for that experience.

I gained lifelong friendships with people from around the world, a network filled with connections across various backgrounds and industries, and fluency in English. I built strong relationships with my lecturers, improved my academic skills, and gained invaluable exposure to new opportunities. Most importantly, I developed an ambition that continues to open doors for me in the professional world.

What did you like best about living and studying in Southampton?

What I liked best about living in Southampton was the city's vibrant atmosphere. I enjoyed running along the seaside on weekends and the convenience of taking a bus to London since it's not far away. Southampton is perfect for students. I never felt bored.

People are friendly and welcoming. I enjoyed studying alongside students from Norway, China, India, Sweden, Italy, and many other countries. Being part of the international student community was fantastic, as it enriched my learning experience and broadened my perspective. The support, learning resources, and vibrant social life made my time at Solent truly memorable.

What tips would you give to someone wanting a career in your industry?

My advice for anyone looking to pursue a career in this industry is to believe that anything is possible. If you want to start your own business, go for it. If you aspire to be the future CEO of a large company, take the leap. Whether you aim to be a consultant, trader, or lawyer, nothing should hold you back. Dream big and take small steps toward your goals. Although I haven’t accomplished everything yet, the little I've done has been incredibly rewarding. Embrace challenges and seize opportunities when they arise. Never give up and always keep the faith in yourself.
