Three British Army officers, known as TEAM V3NTURE, have become the first all-serving military trio to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a rowboat, with pre-race sports science support from Southampton Solent University's facilities and expertise.
Across a period of 18 months, students and staff at Solent have undertaken pre-challenge testing in the University's physiology lab, which sporting professionals utilise to help up their game. BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science students were invited to conduct testing with the army trio, comprised of Robert Cross, Charlie Newman and Robert Treasure.
Second-year Sport and Exercise Science undergrad, Abi Townsend, says:
"This experience was an incredible endeavour to be part of so early on in my academic career, and it's where I have acquired most of my skills. I greatly appreciated being part of this journey, not only for my growth as an individual but also to have the opportunity to witness the team's growth and have a small role in the history of the incredible event they have conquered!
"This experience at Solent has massively shaped my path in terms of the fields I would like to pursue once I finish my degree, and it's one I will look back on for many years to come."
Training at Solent involved VO2max and lactate threshold testing, which examined the team's fitness levels. This helped the trio understand what was required to complete their challenge, enabling them to map out their training needs and reach peak physical fitness.
Testing took place in Solent's BASES-accredited physiology laboratory, which boats the latest equipment used in physiological assessments. Dr Lee Bridgeman, Lecturer Sport Science and Performance, says:
"This was an excellent opportunity for our students to work with inspirational athletes and get hands-on experience, putting what they learn in lessons into practice. Connecting our students to experiences like these is hugely valuable, giving them a competitive edge when entering employment after graduation."
Having raised more than £100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of Robert's father, Stephen Treasure, the trio completed their challenge on Monday 20 January after 40 days of rowing. Robert returned to campus for further testing following their incredible journey, crediting the support from the University:
"Lee and the students at Solent were fantastic! Clearly driven and passionate about their course, they gave up their time (on a Friday afternoon) to help take us through the tests. The results, that Lee kindly took the time to talk us through, played a really important part in our training and expectations for the row.
"While undertaking the tests the students were all over it, taking the opportunity to learn a new skill under Lee's careful guidance. Clearly switched on, motivated and interested in their course, it has been an absolute pleasure welcoming Lee and his students into the TEAM V3NTURE family!"
