The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) has recognised the high, industry-quality facilities at Solent University, Southampton, re-accrediting their physiology laboratory for another five years.
One of a small selection of universities in England to achieve and retain BASES Laboratory Accreditation, Solent’s physiology lab is housed in Solent’s state-of-the-art Sports Complex, where professional athletes and students alike come to learn, exercise and train. Utilised as a research hub for projects conducted by staff and students, the physiology lab is a key facility within the University.
“This kind of recognition assures current and incoming students that Solent offers the very best facilities for practical, future-ready learning,” says Dr James Wright, Senior Lecturer Sport Science and Performance at Solent.
“Our physiology laboratory is a fantastic resource that really boosts students’ understanding of the way the human body works, and this accreditation is further proof that our work-ready approach to teaching is the best way forward for student success.”
Students on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses benefit from access to the University’s physiology lab, from BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science and MSc Football Science to BSc (Hons) Sport Coaching.
Additionally, the facility widely benefits professional sports teams, including Hampshire Cricket and Southern Vipers. As part of this element of activity at the lab, students have access to real-world experience working with professional athletes during club testing.
Solent supports the teams' pre and post season testing, as well as ad-hoc testing for players coming back from injury, with students learning how to run tests whilst working with professional athletes.
Supporting Solent’s high-standard of teaching, which has been recognised with a TEF triple Gold for leading to excellent outcomes, the physiology lab advances students’ understanding of human anatomy and physiology.
