Solent University, Southampton alumnus Dean Massey, has won the ‘Camera Operator of the Year’ award in the prestigious Royal Television Society Journalism Awards 2022, recognising his "skill in composition, colour and innovative sequence production."
On the award, Dean says: “To have been nominated for this award alongside two fantastic camera operators is a huge honour and feels like a dream come true. From getting the RTS Bursary during my university degree to joining Sky News on the Mick Deane Bursary Scheme, I hope I have done everyone who supported me proud. I’m incredibly grateful for all the support I have received. Thank you.”
In December 2014, before he graduated, Dean secured a job in a trainee position at Sky News - where he gained experience in sound, editing, lighting, and camera work – as the third Mick Deane Bursary Recipient.
Following a successful time in the trainee position Dean started working full-time for Sky News. His Camera Operator Editor achievements for the broadcaster include the coverage of the Australian bush fires, Hong Kong protests, the US election, and filming a climate change documentary in India and Bangladesh.
Sky News say: “The jury said there are a few elite camera operators who regularly feature in the final voting for this category. But this year a new name emerged whose skill in composition, colour and innovative sequence production won the day. 2021 was a crucial year for reporting the environment and this operator brought home the crisis facing our planet with his stunning submission.”
Judges for Britain’s leading forum for television and related media announced their decision during the RTS annual Television Journalism award ceremony in London, on 23 February 2022.
