Whether it is non-fungible token (NFT) drops, the opening of virtual retail spaces, the introduction of virtual influencers, or the launch of the first global Digital Fashion Week, the world of digital fashion continues to grow and innovate, setting an exciting precedent for what could be to come. With everyone from luxury fashion brands to online gaming platforms embracing the opportunities digital fashion holds, this masters will equip you with all the critical and creative skills needed to push your practice and explore the developing symbiosis between the real and the virtual worlds. Whether you come from a background in fashion, media, marketing or gaming, this masters offers you an opportunity to develop your cross-disciplinary practice and explore the future opportunities of the digital world.
Fashion is a dynamic field with trends pointing to the need for all brands to embrace significant innovations in digital design, production and promotion to facilitate the creation of multiple digital and physical products from both fashionable and functional briefs. From immersive experiences to full virtual fashion collections, this course will provide forward thinking postgraduates with the digital capabilities to lead and innovate in this sector while also supporting a student’s individual career aspirations allowing them to tailor work specific to their discipline, whether this be fashion design, marketing, content creation, promotion or gaming.
The course culminates in a final master's submission, where students can either write a thesis or produce an original creative digital fashion outcome using everything from digital design to photography, AR, VR and immersive experiences. Students will have access to a wide range of industry-standard facilities in support of this project.

Meet the team
The University cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.
Facilities
Course facilities include an extensive media loans programme, providing access to high-end DSLR cameras such as the Canon 5D MKII, an extensive range of lenses (including many ‘L’ series and Prime lenses), 35mm cameras, medium format cameras (645, 6x7 and 6x9), large format 5x4 cameras and lenses, and a full stock of accessories – light meters, tripods, flash guns, remote-controlled boom-mounted flash systems and more.
You’ll also have access to our digital reprographics lab, featuring commercial-standard and large-format printers, flatbed scanners, three Hasselblad drum scanners scanning up to 5x4 size and a colour-calibrated ProMac-based reprographic suite. Our recently rebuilt colour and black-and-white darkrooms are of the highest industry standards and students can also freely use our in-house colour film processing machine. Additionally, we have finishing and film processing rooms, a modern multimedia lab featuring 24 iMacs with Adobe Creative Suite and Final Cut Pro, plus large professional photographic studios and associated make-up and styling rooms.
Year one
Core modules
Digital Fashion Practice
This module has been designed to enable master's level students to conceptualise and create a range of theoretical and practical research outputs specific to the current landscape of the digital fashion industry. Students will immerse themselves in the world of digital fashion looking at both its past and present incarnations in the world of fashion (and its emergence in other sectors) pushing their investigations perhaps to the expanding beauty and lifestyle sectors.
Fashion Futures
This module will explore fashion forecasting and the boundaries and limitations of existing knowledge, pushing in to new areas and ideas that will influence and impact future fashion and beauty practice and that, ultimately, will inform developed solutions to complex problems. Central to this module will be the awareness and understanding of emerging digital developments, and the investigation of future digital technology. The evaluation and critical analysis of this complex information will create new knowledge that will be translated into innovative and creative trend interpretation.
Masters Project
In this module students will design, execute and present an individually demanding piece of work that deploys a systematic and in-depth understanding of the skills and debates relevant to creative direction for fashion and beauty.
Masters Project: Proposal and Development
In this module you will plan and prepare an academic proposal for your masters project or dissertation. You will be taught how to successfully define, research and prepare for a substantial project or dissertation that will bring to life research in interdisciplinary creative practice. Traditional research-based skills and knowledge will be explored in relation to contemporary research methodologies. Within the module students will be introduced to diverse research methodologies and sessions will explore how research methods and practices can be applied in the context of critical analysis, academic debate and interdisciplinary creative practices.
Professional Development
This module, which focusses on the fashion, beauty and creative industries around the world, will equip students with advanced skills to enable them to research the industry they seek to work in and to critically analyse opportunities. Students will be supported to produce a career development plan including an element of work-based learning, professional development or professional research practice equivalent to 100 hours.

Graduation costs
There is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost. Extra guest tickets will go on sale after results publication and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost per ticket is currently £15. Please note, we do not guarantee there will be any extra tickets available to purchase.

All international applicants need to be aware that the English language requirements to attend Solent University, and the English language requirements to obtain a visa from the Home Office, may be different. This means that if you meet the Solent University language requirement to gain a place on the course, you may still have to meet additional requirements to be granted with a visa by the Home Office.

Applications for postgraduate courses can be made at any time prior to the start of the course. However, we strongly recommend you apply at your earliest convenience.
Please ensure you upload the following mandatory documents with your application:
- Two academic references.
- Certified transcripts of qualifications, including English language proficiency if non-UK student.
- Copy of passport.
- Copy of current visa (if applicable).
- A personal statement.
- Employer sponsor form, where appropriate.
Language requirements
Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:
- IELTS minimum 6.5 overall with no component score below 5.5
- TOEFL IBT 92 with a minimum of 22 in writing and a minimum of 20 in reading, listening and speaking
- Duolingo English Language Test - 115 overall with minimum of 100 in each component or equivalent.
Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.
Pre-Sessional English programme
The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.
