The foundation year is designed to reflect the needs of the sports industry. Students explore a variety of subjects from leadership to fitness foundations, sports business management, sport in the contemporary world and volunteering, before continuing on to the three-year full-time degree, BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching and Physical Education.
This hands-on course combines theory and practice to develop skilled educators and coaches. With a focus on employability, you will get the opportunity to engagage with work placements, gain professional qualifications, network with a breadth of organisations, whilst developing both your practical and professional skills.
The course will progress your skills in delivering coaching sessions to local athletes and community groups whilst developing a deeper knowledge of sport policy, sport development, and project delivery with an opportunity to devise, deliver, and evaluate a community-based initiative. Placements have taken place with Southampton Schools, Southampton School Games, Southampton Football Club and Hampshire County Cricket.
This degree has also been developed to help prepare you for a career in teaching. You will gain first-hand experience of teaching physical education across a variety of schools, the latest child development practices, and issues facing the education sector. Work placements spread across all three years of study ensure that you will graduate feeling fully prepared to undertake your initial teacher training with either a PGCE or School Direct training provider. This course also offers additional qualifications for you to obtain with your degree, including ActiveiQ, CIMSPA and 1st4sport. A free sports kit is provided to students in their first-year of study.
We are proud to manage the Southampton School Sports Partnership, a scheme that was introduced to improve the quality of sports education within the city. Our involvement in the partnership gives sport development, coaching and physical education students access to 72 primary schools, 15 secondary schools and six further education colleges in and around the Southampton area. Working alongside these partner institutions will help you to put the theory you’ve learnt into practice.
We are also proud to be an associated partner with the Association for Physical Education (afPE). This partnership demonstrates the courses aim to develop critical practitioners who may wish to progress into teaching roles.

The course team have excellent links with local schools, as well as local and national sports organisations and clubs. Their vast experience of working in the industry not only provides valuable expertise, but also can also provide beneficial networking and part-time work opportunities.
The University cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.
Solent University is home to a range of sporting facilities and gyms. Students on this course will use the Solent Sports Complex to plan, deliver and evaluate their coaching and teaching practices, as well as make use of our sports grounds and psychology laboratory.

During this module you will learn about key definitions, theories and concepts of leadership including: leadership styles, theories of learning, becoming a leader, creating an environment, reflective practice, leading individuals and teams, how to develop athletes and safe and inclusive practice.
In addition to learning the theories that underpin the subject of fitness in sport, you will engage with various topics and learning styles and opportunities.
This module will introduce you to the wider sport, health and football industry and enable you to focus on the environments that relate more closely to your chosen degree in sport, health, or football.
Studying this module will provide you with a broad overview of the sport business and will enable you to develop subject-specific knowledge in several key areas such as operations, management, finance and marketing.
The module will focus on the personal and professional development opportunities available to enhance the key attributes that employers demand, covering both customer-facing and business-facing experiences.
In this module will focus on the contemporary issues in sport. Teaching and learning will be led by issues highlighted in the academic arena, trade press and general media.

A recent study by YouGov for Sports Coach UK revealed 3.1 million adults in England coached sport or physical activity each year, and over 370,000 make their living from coaching full time. Full time coaches deliver 45% of the 7.6 million coach-led participation experiences each week.
As the coaching industry continues to grow, this course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to provide for and support the changing sport and physical activity needs of the UK population.
The need for undergraduate study programmes which are specifically aimed at pre-service physical education teachers continues to grow to support the health and future development of children and young people.
This course also acts to ensure that future physical education teachers have a solid understanding of fundamental pedagogical principles.

Starting salary: £15,000 to £25,000
The typical salary range for senior coaches employed by NGBs or professional sports clubs is £30,000 to £35,000.
New entrants (England): £28,000 to £38,810
After gaining a teaching qualification following on from this course, as well as experience and expertise, there are opportunities to move up into the role of leading practitioner in England and Wales.
Starting salary: £18,000 to £23,000
Salaries can rise to £30,000 with experience. A sports development manager can earn up to £40,000. Salaries vary depending on types of employer.

Cost of living support
At Solent, we understand that the cost of living crisis may be of some concern. To help, we've put together some detailed information to show what support is available and how to make your money go further.
There is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost. Extra guest tickets will go on sale after results publication and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost per ticket is currently £15. Please note, we do not guarantee there will be any extra tickets available to purchase.
