Biography
Nouman is a Chartered Marine Engineer with a Chief Engineer (Unlimited) license and a master’s degree in marine engineering. He has extensive experience in the maritime industry, including sailing experience of about 12 years at senior marine engineer level on board a variety of ships.
Nouman is also a maritime environmental specialist with over 17 years' experience working at the leading classification society Lloyd’s Register, where he approved plans and drawings relevant to engineering systems and MARPOL. He would ‘type approve’ pollution prevention equipment in accordance with the EU Marine Equipment Directive (MED), Lloyd’s Register rules and regulations, and Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) guidelines. He also updated Lloyd’s Register rules and regulations and coordinated with various industry stakeholders to guide their field surveyors and regional client facing offices worldwide on statutory issues, particularly related to new maritime regulations and their applicability on Lloyd’s Register class ships.
In 2004, Nouman pursued his career as a marine surveyor in Dubai and upgraded his skill in commercial surveying.
Nouman started his career as an engineering cadet at the Pakistan Marine Academy, graduating with BSc in Maritime Studies. After the necessary workshop training, he started his sea career in 1992 and was promoted to senior marine engineer positions, achieving valuable experience on ships such as LNG, VLCC, tankers, DP tankers, container, general cargo, and offshore support vessels in various shipping companies such as Shell, United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) and Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC).
As a lecturer in marine engineering at Solent, Nouman is responsible for teaching a range of marine engineering subjects to senior maritime students.

Nouman has over 32 years' experience in the maritime industry, including 12 years sailing as a marine engineer on board s variety of ships (LNG, VLCC, tankers, DP tankers, container ships, general cargo, and offshore support vessels).
He worked with Lloyd’s Register for more than 17 years where he performed plan approval and type approval activities relevant to following equipment and systems:
- Exhaust gas cleaning system (EGCS)
- Shipboard oil/marine pollution emergency plan (SOPEP/SMPEP)
- Oil discharge monitoring and control systems (ODM)
- Crude oil washing (COW) operations and equipment manual
- Procedures and arrangements (P&A) manuals for chemical tankers and offshore support vessels
- Volatile organic compounds (VOC)
- Vapour emission control systems (VECS)
- Bilge separators and bilge alarms
- Oil/water interface detectors
- Ship-to-ship (STS) operations lan
Nouman has represented in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as SME and contributed on the development of guidelines and amendments to MARPOL annexes. He was part of the IMO working group for preparation of the OSV Code.
He has worked as a marine surveyor and performed number of commercial surveys, such as pre-purchase survey, damage inspection, bunker survey, draught surveys, condition monitoring survey, insurance survey, discharging supervision of edible oils, and cargo damage surveys, on behalf of underwriters.
