Sport coaching and physical education at Solent

If you have a passion for sport and want to inspire the next generation, you can look to a fulfilling career in coaching or physical education.

You could be coaching athletes, helping community groups or even teaching in a school – and to prepare for this, at Solent you’ll build knowledge in child development, physical and motor movement in young people, educational psychology, physiology, biomechanics and the psychology of coaching.

Solent is accredited by the Chartered Institute for Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) and is an associated partner of the Association for Physical Education (afPE), so whichever route you take, you can be assured that you have a firm foundation relevant to your chosen industry.

For physical education, we have the Southampton School Sports Partnership – a scheme that was introduced to improve the quality of sports education in and around Southampton – with access to primary schools, secondary schools and further education colleges, helping you to put the theory you’ve learnt into practice.

Sport coaching offers two distinct pathways: Sport Development explores sport policy and sport growth in community-based initiatives, while the Science of Coaching will develop a deeper knowledge of scientific theory – physiology, biomechanics and the psychology of coaching.

In all these areas, you can expect real-world learning and the opportunity to develop practical and professional skills through a variety of placement options.
