  • We are proud to manage the Southampton School Sports Partnership, a scheme that was introduced to improve the quality of sports education within the city. This gives students access to primary and secondary schools as well as six further education colleges in and around the Southampton area.

  • Ultra-modern sports complex, featuring two sports halls, a public gym and a dedicated teaching gym.
  • Partnership agreement with Southampton Football Club, with real-world industry experience at the Club as part of the curriculum featuring professional coaching and development from Premier League coaching staff.
  • The course team have excellent links with both local and national sports organisations and clubs, as well as experience of working in the industry.
  • Work placement is embedded across all three years of study with two to five hours of practical experience each week. You’ll deliver PE sessions every week at schools or in our Sports Complex.
  • Free sports kit is provided to students in their first year of study.
  • After your degree, you can progress onto a postgraduate teacher training course.

Course overview

This hands-on course combines theory and practice to develop skilled educators and coaches. With a focus on employability, you will get the opportunity to engagage with work placements, gain professional qualifications, network with a breadth of organisations, whilst developing both your practical and professional skills. 

The course will progress your skills in delivering coaching sessions to local athletes and community groups whilst developing a deeper knowledge of sport policy, sport development, and project delivery with an opportunity to devise, deliver, and evaluate a community-based initiative. Placements have taken place with Southampton Schools, Southampton School Games, Southampton Football Club and Hampshire County Cricket. 

This degree has also been developed to help prepare you for a career in teaching. You will gain first-hand experience of teaching physical education across a variety of schools, the latest child development practices, and issues facing the education sector. Work placements spread across all three years of study ensure that you will graduate feeling fully prepared to undertake your initial teacher training with either a PGCE or School Direct training provider. This course also offers additional qualifications for you to obtain with your degree, including ActiveiQ, CIMSPA and 1st4sport. A free sports kit is provided to students in their first-year of study. 

We are proud to manage the Southampton School Sports Partnership, a scheme that was introduced to improve the quality of sports education within the city. Our involvement in the partnership gives sport development, coaching and physical education students access to 72 primary schools, 15 secondary schools and six further education colleges in and around the Southampton area. Working alongside these partner institutions will help you to put the theory you’ve learnt into practice.

We are also proud to be an associated partner with the Association for Physical Education (afPE). This partnership demonstrates the courses aim to develop critical practitioners who may wish to progress into teaching roles.

Who is this course for?

This course is ideally suited to students who want to develop a wide breadth of knowledge surrounding the sport and education environment. Applicants should have a strong enthusiasm for the subject area and a desire to encourage participation. Prior involvement in coaching, sports leadership, and volunteering is beneficial but not mandatory. However, a commitment to professional development and a willingness to learn, reflect, and improve is desirable. Applicants should be proactive, self-motivated, with a desire to inspire others and make a positive impact through sport and physical education.

What does this course lead to?

This course offers you the chance to work in various areas of the sports and education industry, including community and youth sports coaching, sports development, and more. It also provides a pathway to Initial Teacher Education and Training, such as PGCE or School Direct routes.

Working within Physical Education is a hands-on and dynamic environment, offering a mix of classroom learning and outdoor/physical activities, making it ideal for those who enjoy an active work environment. Teaching provides a stable and fulfilling career path with opportunities for advancement, such as leadership roles in education, curriculum, or sports coordination.

Both Sports Coaching and Physical Education are valued worldwide, offering internation teaching and coaching opportunities for those passionate about travel and sport.

Meet the team

The course team have excellent links with local schools, as well as local and national sports organisations and clubs. Their vast experience of working in the industry not only provides valuable expertise, but also can also provide beneficial networking and part-time work opportunities.

The University cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.

Facilities

Solent University is home to a range of sporting facilities and gyms. Students on this course will use the Solent Sports Complex to plan, deliver and evaluate their coaching and teaching practices, as well as make use of our sports grounds and psychology laboratory.

Our vibrant campus brings state-of-the-art facilities to enhance your learning and elevate your student experience. Our award-winning teaching building, The Spark is centred around students and offers a stimulating study environment with flexible learning spaces. Away from studying, why not try out the gyms, fitness studios and sports halls in our £28 million Sports Complex, or watch a blockbuster film at our student-run cinema with Dolby Atmos audio.
